Can a vegan survive Asia's garden city?

This time around my travel plans landed me in a city that I had not visited for the last eight or nine years. From my understanding Singapore had changed a whole lot. When I last visited Singapore, it was known by foreigners as the "fine" city. Basically, a city where you could get fined for anything and everything. But now it was the garden city. A city that still maintains its tall concrete building but is abundant with lush greenery and a clean environment. Being a nature lover, I loved the sound of that. The idea of incorporating all the aspects of a fast paced city but still being dedicated to environmentalism made me want to visit the city even more. Nature loving aside, the food as always came to mind. The last time I was in Singapore I was vegetarian and I found that Singapore had a whole lot of options for me. Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Western, fusion cuisine, you name it and there was a place that could serve it vegetarian. However, as a vegan I needed to find out if Singapore gave me the same food experiences that it did when I was a vegetarian. Now to be fair I was staying with relatives so I did have a lot of home cooked meals but I did try my best to find out from local Singaporeans where to get the best vegan options could be found. In no particular order here is what I found:

1. Veganburg

Taken from VeganBurg's FB page.

This burger joint serves up some delicious vegan burgers. Unfortunately, I did not get to try their burgers when I was in Singapore, but my cousin who eats meat suggested that I should dine there and if a meat eater is telling you that a vegan burger joint is where you should go, then you know that they have had a good experience there and thus it has to be good! So, if you are ever in Singapore, do give this place a try and let me know in the comments if this burger joint was a yay or nay for you.

2. Genesis Vegan Restaurant

Taken from Genesis Vegan Restaurant

This restaurant was on almost every vegan blog or article that was written about dining in Singapore. I truly wanted to try this place out but unfortunately time did not permit me. But taking that this is a popular restaurant, I could not miss the opportunity to mention it, in hopes that you would have an amazing dining experience there.

3. Bakerzin

Taken at the restaurant before devouring...

This isn't a vegan restaurant but they were able to make me a delicious plate of vegan pasta for me. The waitress here took her time to answer all my questions and their vegan pasta was delicious. If you ever find yourself at The Gardens by the Bay, this is a restaurant that can definitely serve you something vegan.

4. The Palms

Taken from their menu

If you have friends or family that live in Singapore who are members of the Singapore Swimming Club, this is a restaurant that you need to check out. They have a large selection of vegetarian food and a lot of vegan options. Also if you are staying with family members or friends that do eat meat, this is a great place to go as they can get their meat dishes and you can get your vegan friendly dishes all under one roof.

5. Coffee stand at Gardens by the Bay

2 cups of coffee, a cup of corn, and a bag of peanuts for less than SGD 8.

While looking at all the beautiful nature that the Gardens had to offer, mom and I got a bit peckish. We managed to find a place that served coffee, some nuts and corn (without the butter or margarine). It was a great way to fill our growling stomachs as we walked around enjoying the view. The gentleman at the cash register was even kind enough to mark which coffee had milk.

6. Changi Airport, Terminal 4

Vada, a savory fried snack

Before boarding the plane, I decided to grab some breakfast at the airport. To my surprise, there were a few vegan options available at their food court. I decided upon vada, which is and Indian snack that I had not had in years. It was delicious, or should I say veganlicious! It was served piping hot, the oil had been drained out (no one wants oily vada), their dhal was warm and thick (nobody wants diluted dhal), and their chutneys weren't too spicy, making it great for a morning treat.

So, I guess I have come to the end, and this is where I tell you if a place I visited gets the thumbs up from me or the sad thumbs down. My verdict...Singapore has a lot of great vegan options. Sadly, I did not get to check them all out, but that only means one thing...I have to go back this time with the sole purpose of eating at as many vegan restaurants as I can! So till my next Singaporean vegan trip, cheers and live it veganastic!
