Your guide to vegan food in Malaysia's capital city.
When I first became a vegan, a constant question kept arising...'If we got out to have a meal, what would you eat?' It was a question that took me a little while to answer. The reason for this was, I did not know anyone who was a vegan and I did not find many sites online that helped new vegans discover restaurants around Kuala Lumpur or Petaling Jaya. So when my vegan journey first began, I stuck to only vegetarian restaurants and salads because those were the safest options. However, as my journey continued I found so many places that do offer great meals for vegans and I am going to share some of my go to favorites with you. Let me tell you now, these restaurants have not paid me to write about them, these are restaurants that I found on my own and that you will probably find me dining at when I am too lazy to cook at home. The restaurants I currently like to visit in no particular order are:
1. Yishensu - A Vegetarian Connoisseur located in 1 Utama, Petaling Jaya

When shopping in 1 Utama this is my favorite pit stop. Yishensu has both individual dishes and dishes that you can share. Not only do I get vegan options but I leave content. I have not tried all the dishes here, but the ones that I have tried, have left me wanting to come back for more. I really enjoy their petai sambal. If you are ever in 1 Utama and feel like something vegetarian or vegan, you should definitely check this place out.
2. Nature's Recipe Cafe located in Section 8, Petaling Jaya

This is my go to spot when I am looking for some vegan dim sum options. Even my friends who love eating meat have suggested dining here on multiple occasions. I guess it is a place that allows me to get my vegan delights but also allows them not to miss their meat options. This restaurant offers small bites such as dumplings and pau, but also has main meals. I really enjoy the dumplings, noodle soup dishes and their sago dessert. If you are in Section 8 PJ, this is a cafe you must visit.
3. Simple Life Healthy Vegetarian Restaurant located in Paradigm Mall, Petaling Jaya

When I am in Paradigm Mall I always stop by Simple Life. I make sure on that day I have eaten as little as possible so that I can enjoy one of their set meals or noodle dishes. I also love the fact that they clearly indicate food that has egg or is spicy. It's my go to when I want to unwind after hours of shopping or
window shopping. If you want a simple and healthy meal after shopping in Paradigm Mall you must check this restaurant out.
4. Restoran Sayur-Sayuran Soon Tet, Taman Desa Jaya, Kuala Lumpur

This is where my family and I go to have a mouthwatering bowl of vegetarian bah ku teh. No matter how many times I tell myself that I am going to try something new, I always find myself ordering their bagus teh (their name for their bah ku teh). Do not get me wrong, I have tried other dishes, but I always get the bagus teh with every order. I find myself driving to this restaurant with excitement even if it means being stuck in traffic for two hours. If you are looking for an amazing bowl of vegetarian bah ku teh, this is the place to go.
5. Sukaphat Thai Vegetarian Restaurant, Jalan Klang Lama, Kuala Lumpur

This restaurant is situated inside the Valenza Hotel. It serves a variety of Thai food and has a buffet style service. I really enjoy the food here. I had never heard of Thai vegetarian food in Malaysia till a friend introduced me to this restaurant and I am so glad she did. I enjoy their tom yum, green curry and mango pudding. If you feel like tasting the flavours of Thailand, but do not feel like cooking it yourself, make your way to this restaurant for a Thai Foodie Getaway.
6. Beyond Veggie, 3 Damansara, PJ

Beyond Veggie is a vegetarian restaurant that has local and western delights. For vegetarians they even have eggless cake options. Unfortunately for vegans, we will have to wait till this eatery creates their vegan cake recipe. I normally find myself dinning at the outlet in 3 Damansara formerly known as Tropicana City Mall, but they have outlets around Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya. Their revitalsing herbal soup, fruit rojak, stir fired vegetables and mix vegetable curry always leave me with a full stomach. If you are ever near a Beyond Veggie, make sure to give it a try.
7. Kuan Yin Vegetarian Restaurant, Section 17, Petaling Jaya

I have been going to this restaurant since I was a child. They have center dishes and individual orders. They do serve egg in this restaurant, but the waiters and waitresses are able to tell you which dishes have eggs and which dishes do not. I mostly order individual rice or noodle dishes but on the few occasions that I have ordered center dishes, I have found them to be delicious. I go here for their bitter gourd rice, sweet and sour, ginger duck rice, curry, rice with vegetables, dry chilli, black pepper udon me, and claypot. They have tons of dishes in this restaurant and I have not tried them all, but I am sure you will be happy that you came here.
8. Super Saigon Seventeen Mall, Seventeen Mall, Petaling Jaya

I found this restaurant while venturing through this newly built mall. It came as a surprise to see that they had a lot of vegetarian options. I was reassured by the manager that the pho was made using a vegetarian broth and was vegan friendly. I have gone to this restaurant three times and I have enjoyed the pho and spring rolls. If you have never tasted pho before becoming a vegetarian or vegan, this is one place where you will get the opportunity to try it out.
9. PappaRich, Centerpoin Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya

It is a surprise to many when I say that PappaRich has options for vegetarians that they can also make vegan friendly. I normally visit or order from the PappaRich located in Centerpoint, but I am sure that the others are equally as good. Their Ovo Vegetraian Nasi Lemak can be served without the sunny side up egg making it a good vegan friendly option. I do enjoy their nasi lemak (without the egg of course) and the vegetarian char siew pau. Do make your way to PappaRich when you are dining with others who still want to enjoy their meats while you get your vegan or vegetarian options.
10. Sushi Zanmai, Subang Parade, Selangor

Sushi Zanmai is another place where you will be able to find food when dining with your friends that are meat eaters. I agree, you might not get a great variety of options, but you will get enough to keep you full till your next meal. I normally stick to the avocado roll, cucumber roll, edamame and salad roll. This is a good place to enjoy something Japanese that is vegetarian or vegan. When you go there, make sure to let them know that you cannot have the mayonnaise and you will be able to enjoy their food care free.
And there you go...a list of ten places that I currently eat at and enjoy to the max. I hope you are able to go to these restaurants and enjoy them as much as I do. I am in the process of hunting for more restaurants, so keep a look out for Part 2. CHEERS!
